The Building Inspector is responsible for monitoring permitted construction of new and existing buildings in the county to ensure that work performed meets code and ordinance regulations.

Construction or work that requires a permit must be inspected at different stages throughout the project. In accordance with the Building Codes, construction work should remain accessible and exposed for inspection purposes until approved.


The Shelby County Build­ing Inspector is responsible for the following within the county:

  • Commercial and Residential Building Permit Issuance

  • Electrical Permit Issuance

  • Project Plan Review

  • Build­ing Inspections

  • Cer­tifi­cate of Occu­pan­cy Issuance

  • Building Code Enforcement

Building Permit Application Requirements:

​​​·        Completed and signed paper application OR completed portal application.

·        A physical address is required before a permit is issued.

·        A zoning permit from Triple S Planning Commission is required before an application for a building permit may be made. 

·        Residential plans may be drawn by anyone with enough skill to draw straight lines, to measure accurately and to put those measurements down on paper. Plans must be to scale and must clearly show all the work you intend to do on the building as well as the existing conditions. Existing and new construction must be clearly delineated. Drawings must be legible and have footer, foundation, wall section, labeled floor plans and elevations.

Important Information:


Please call our office to schedule an appointment for the following required inspections:

1.   FOOTER- Call the morning that you are going to pour the footer. Inspection must take place prior to concrete.

2.   FRAMING- When the Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC have passed the rough-in inspections, and before you cover or insulate the structure, call to schedule an inspection.

3.   INSULATION - This inspection will occur once all the insulation is installed in the walls and floor systems, but prior to the installation of any drywall covering.

4.   FINAL- When the Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC and Septic have passed the final inspections, Address Guidelines have been met and the structure is complete, call to schedule a final building inspection. A Certificate of Occupancy will be issued when the final inspection is complete. Unless prior arrangements have been made with the building inspector, furniture and décor may not be present during inspection. ​
